Etymology
From Middle French Egypte, from Latin Aegyptus, from Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aiguptos), from Mycenaean Greek *Aiguptos (nb. 𐁁𐀓𐀠𐀴𐀍 (ai-ku-pi-ti-jo) *Aiguptiyós 'Egyptian') (perhaps via Minoan) < Middle Egyptian *Ḥaʔat-Kuʔ-Patāḥa (ḥȝ.t kȝ ptḥ), literally 'The Temple of the Soul of Ptah', initially referring to the prominent temple in the city of Memphis once capital in the Middle Kingdom.
